ARTISTRY IS WHERE IT STARTED. EXPERTISE IS WHAT IT BECAME.

For more than two decades, Pekela Riley has worked across the full landscape of hair—from the intimacy of the salon chair to editorial and celebrity artistry, global brand campaigns, professional education, product innovation and enterprise strategy.

That range matters. Understanding hair is one thing. Understanding the artist, the client, the product, the service and the business around the work creates an entirely different kind of expertise.

ARTISTRY. EDUCATION. INNOVATION.

ARTISTRY

Texture. Shape. Movement. Transformation.

Pekela's work is grounded in a deep understanding of hair—how it behaves, how it moves and how texture, shape, proportion, technique and intention work together to create the result. Her portfolio spans editorial, commercial, celebrity, texture and extensions.

EDUCATION

Teach the why, not only the how.

Technique can be repeated. Understanding can be applied. Pekela develops education that helps artists understand why something works so they can make better decisions across textures, tools, products and real clients. From foundational texture education to enterprise curriculum and educator enablement, the goal is greater capability—not just better imitation.

INNOVATION

Built from the work.

Years behind the chair revealed problems that artistry alone could not solve. That experience became the foundation for Salon PK, True + Pure Texture, product development, professional tool consultation and intellectual property built around the realities of textured hair.

FROM THE CHAIR TO THE BOARDROOM.

Pekela's career has moved through nearly every layer of professional beauty: artist, salon owner, educator, curriculum developer, product founder, brand partner and industry voice. Not as separate careers, but as connected vantage points.

The chair reveals the problem. Education creates understanding. Innovation builds the solution. Enterprise creates scale.

MAKE TEXTURE SYNONYMOUS WITH HAIR.

Texture should not be an elective inside professional hair education. For Pekela Riley, the future of hair is not a choice between texture expertise and hair expertise. Texture belongs inside the definition of hair.

That requires more than identifying curl patterns or repeating a finished style. It requires Texture Fluency: the ability to observe what the hair is doing, understand why a technique works, identify the variables that matter and adapt across real people, products, tools and services.

That is the work: moving texture from specialty knowledge to foundational professional capability.

SELECTED WORK & PARTNERSHIPS

ULTA BEAUTY

Building texture capability at enterprise scale.

As Ulta Beauty's inaugural Diversity Strategist and a member of the Ulta Beauty Pro Team, Pekela helped shape texture education across artistry, salon service, cultural understanding and the guest experience. Her work evolved into Ulta Beauty's first enterprise-wide texture curriculum. Following implementation, internal Ulta Beauty reporting showed a 45% increase in texture services in Ulta salons.

DYSON

Translating technology through the professional texture lens.

Pekela's work with Dyson spans professional texture insight, education and ambassadorship. As a Dyson US Styling Ambassador, she helps translate advanced hair technology into practical understanding for professionals working across texture—from airflow and attachments to styling technique and extension blending.

MIZANI / L'ORÉAL

Creating global texture imagery from the culture out.

Beginning with global image campaigns and evolving into her 2019 appointment as Mizani Global Artistic Director, Pekela's work brought together texture artistry, creative direction, education, cultural perspective and brand storytelling.

BUILT FROM THE WORK.

TRUE + PURE TEXTURE

Professional experience revealed a recurring problem: textured-hair extensions too often required the client's natural hair to conform to the extension instead of the extension being designed to complement the client. Pekela created True + Pure Texture to approach that problem differently—building extension options around texture matching and the belief that added hair should expand possibility without erasing the hair a woman already owns.

SALON PK

Founded in Jacksonville in December 2005, Salon PK has served as Pekela's creative laboratory for more than two decades—a place where artistry, education, client behavior and the realities of professional beauty meet every day. The chair remains one of her greatest sources of intelligence.
